About
the Authors
Andrew Kaplan is a partner in the Labor and Employment
Law Department of Silver & Freedman, a law firm with offices
in Century City, California. He is a 1973 graduate of the Boalt
Hall School of Law at the University of California Berkeley.
Mr. Kaplan's practice is limited to the representation of employers
and he provides his clients with both counseling and litigation
services. Mr. Kaplan is a frequent speaker to business and professional
groups on the topics of wrongful discharge, personnel policies,
sexual harassment and dis-crimination, workers' compensation,
union avoidance and other labor-relations matters. His articles
on these and other employment matters have appeared in numerous
national magazines.
Rachel McKinney is a Vice President and Underwriting
Director with the wholesale brokerage firm of Swett & Crawford,
Inc., where she developed and manages the firm's national employment
practices liability insurance product, EPL-Exclusive Advantage.
She is a graduate of Bradley University in Economics and Journalism.
In addition to being a frequent and popular lecturer to agent
and broker groups, industry associations and employers, she also
teaches Continuing Education courses dealing with directors and
officers, professional errors and omissions and employment practices
liability insurance issues. Ms. McKinney is active in insurance
industry organizations, helping found the southern California
regional chapter for the Professional Liability Underwriting
Society (PLUS). She is recipient of the 1995 PLUS Founders Award
and also is a member of the National Association of Insurance
Women, where she served as President of one of their chapters.
Beth A. Schroeder is a partner in the employment law department
of Silver & Freedman. She represents employers in all phases
of employer-employee relations, including state and federal wage
and hour claims and litigation, OSHA matters, immigration control,
unemployment and workers' compensation claims, union-organizing
activities and unfair labor practices charges before the National
Labor Relations Board. Ms. Schroeder specializes in Title VII,
ADA and other federal and state anti-discrimination laws. Ms.
Schroeder received her Juris Doctorate in 1985 from the University
of California at Los Angeles. She is a regular speaker to business
and professionals on a wide variety of employment issues.
Leonard Surdyk is a partner in the Chicago law firm
of Davidson Mandell & Menkes. He is admitted to practice
law in Illinois, before the United States District Court for
the Northern District of Illinois and the United States Courts
of Appeals for the Ninth and Tenth Circuits. His practice focuses
on professional indemnity and employment practices insurance
issues. Mr. Surdyk is a frequent lecturer on insurance matters
and has co-edited textbooks for the Professional Liability Underwriting
Society dealing with directors and officers liability insurance
and medical and non-medical professional liability. Mr. Surdyk
graduated with high distinction in Political Science and Psychology
from Loyola University and received his Juris Doctorate, also
with high distinction, from the University of Illinois, where
he was an associate editor of the University of Illinois Law
Review.
Gary Griffin has more than 17 years' experience in
broker operations, risk management consulting, and publishing
of risk and insurance references. His expertise includes employment
practices insurance issues, directors and officers liability,
professional liability, pollution liability, and umbrella liability
insurance.
Mr. Griffin is senior editor for The EPL Book, The Umbrella
Book, The D&O Book and The Risk Management Letter.
He also developed, designed and manages Griffin Communications,
Inc.'s Employment Practices Liability and Insurance National
Forum, a two-day seminar covering a broad range of em-ployment
practices liability and insurance issues. Mr. Griffin has been
a frequent lecturer on employment practices and was the EPL session
leader at the 1996 RIMS convention in Atlanta. Gary also has
written numerous articles for national periodicals, including
The Compleate Lawyer and Fleet Financial Magazine.
